Why was the 18650 lithium battery eliminated by Tesla?
Cars are men's cars, and new energy electric vehicles are rapidly emerging around the world, and power batteries have also become the focus of everyone's attention. Take Tesla as an example, it's cool and cool. It is said that Tesla tested many types of batteries when developing electric vehicle batteries, and finally adopted 18650 cells as the technical route for new energy electric vehicle batteries. So why did Tesla finally announce the switch to 21700 lithium batteries?
The 18650 lithium battery is a standard lithium-ion battery model set by SONY in Japan in order to save costs. As a traditional battery cell, the 18650 is relatively mature in technology and has strong adaptability. It is a kind of power battery with the earliest commercialization, the highest degree of production automation and the lowest current cost. The 21700 lithium battery is a new model developed to meet the requirements of electric vehicles for longer cruising range and to improve the effective utilization of vehicle battery space.
After the 18650 model is switched to the 21700 model, the battery capacity of a single battery can reach 3~4.8Ah, a substantial increase of 35%, and the number of batteries required under the same energy can be reduced by about 1/3.
The energy density of the 21700 battery system is about 300Wh/kg, which is about 20% higher than the 250Wh/kg of the 18650 battery system.
The 21700's power lithium battery system is priced at $170/KWh, which is about 8.1% lower than the 18650's $185/KWh. The cost of the 18650 system is about $171/KWh. After switching to the 21700, the system cost can be reduced by about 9% to $155/KWh. This performance is quite good.
The 21700 type battery has a higher energy density than the well-known 18650 type battery, and the cost will be reduced after grouping. In general, the 21700 maintains the high reliability and stable performance of the 18650 type battery, and the battery performance is greatly improved compared to the 18650 in all aspects.
The power density of the 21700-type battery is currently the highest in the world, and the price will be more approachable. With the rapid development of the new energy vehicle market, domestic battery manufacturers have sharp eyes. Although the 18650 has accompanied Tesla's rise, as far as the current data is concerned, the 21700 battery can indeed better meet the battery performance requirements of electric vehicles. These obvious advantages of the 21700 battery, coupled with Tesla's industry influence, predict that this battery is likely to become the next cylindrical battery development trend.
